“It is critical that journalists be able to do their work free from violent attacks, free from violence,” UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York, the US, on Friday, according to a press release by the UN.
“We said this over and over again, the guns must be silenced. We’ve called for a humanitarian ceasefire and we have called for the guns to be silenced in conflicts all over the world where journalists are being killed, where UN facilities are being destroyed, and where innocent civilians are paying the price,” Dujarric added.
According to Al Jazeera, its cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa was injured in the city of Khan Yunis on Friday after Israeli drones fired missiles at a school where civilians had taken shelter.
“Following Samer’s injury, he was left to bleed to death for over 5 hours, as Israeli forces prevented ambulances and rescue workers from reaching him, denying the much-needed emergency treatment,” the news network added.
Al Jazeera condemned “in the strongest terms” the Israeli attack that resulted in the killing of its cameraman and held the regime responsible for “systematically targeting and killing Al Jazeera journalists and their families.”
The network’s chief correspondent Wael al-Dahdouh was also injured in the strike in Khan Yunis. Back in November, he also lost his wife, son, daughter and grandson in an Israeli strike.
According to a press release by the Committee to Protect Journalists, CPJ, at least 64 journalists and media workers have been killed since the Gaza war began on October 7.
